Why People Like Shopping at Jerry's Home Improvement Center

There are not very many people that have ever shopped at Jerry’s Home Improvement Center. Well, not compared to the number of people that have shopped at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Though Jerry’s offers as much merchandise as their competitors, there is a difference.

There is only one Jerry’s Home Improvement Center, and it is independently owned and operated by the original Jerry’s family. Some claim it is the largest independently owned hardware store in the United States.

Independent Retailer

In the last few years, many communities have started to oppose the construction of “big box” stores and strip malls. They argue the big chains squeeze smaller retailers out of business. Jerry’s Home Improvement Center has not gone out of business despite competition from new chains.

Sometimes it is, in fact, difficult for an independent retailer to match large chains on prices. That is because chains buy a lot more goods from manufacturers, and so have more bargaining power. That means large chains can negotiate lower prices with factories, and hence sell cheaper.

Also, many chain stores have enough capital to sell what are called “loss leaders.” These are items the store actually sells at a financial loss just to bring customers into their stores and get them in the habit of shopping there. Some really big retailers have enough money in the bank to keep selling lots of loss leaders for a long time; small retailers complain that this is unfair.

Some claim large retailers are not as much a part of the community as independent retailers. The management is brought in from other communities, and the stores are often built on what had been tree-covered land, making lots of residents angry. Certainly Jerry’s Home Improvement Center shows up on many lists of companies sponsoring local events, and their management is active in the community; but then, their store is as big as any other.

At Jerry’s Home Improvement Center, customers know they will have a selection of goods as wide as in any home improvement store. From plants to light fixtures, Jerry’s is a complete store, and their advertisements promise to match any competitor’s prices.

For many people, there is something comfortable about shopping at a store like Jerry’s where they know the employees and even the management personally. If there is ever a problem, they know they can easily talk to the family that owns and operates the whole place.
