Remodeling The Interior Of A House Is A
Multi-Dimensional Task
Remodeling the interior of a house includes many things like
checking the foundation’s state, refurbishing the basement and
attic (two often-neglected parts of the house), fixing and
decorating the ceiling, and remodeling bathrooms and kitchen.
Mental mapping of the future look of the places is the first
thing to act on before actually venturing into these tasks.
Foundation Repairing
Given that the foundation is the most important part of a
house, treating a weak foundation is the first concern in
remodeling the interior of a house. In case of old homes, it is
advisable to seek the counsel of your home inspector on the
need of evaluation by a structural engineer. Foundations should
be insulated to minimize heat loss and break moisture
intrusion. Repairing cracks and displacements, and laying new,
standard concrete would render the base of your house solid and
reliable.
Basements and Attics
Adding more lights to the basement is not enough. Making it
more airy and stylish would require dressing up the ceilings,
leveling and drying the floor, painting the walls with shades
of varying colors, and adding any dainties (favorite books,
music etc.). Turn the basement into a fun place. Insulating the
attic is particularly helpful in winter since attic is where
most of the heat leaves the house. Ventilation of the attic in
summers will keep the summer heat away. You may need to check
the old dry wood used in your old home if creaking sounds are
heard, especially in windy weather.
Ceilings and Cracks in the Walls
Old homes usually develop cracks in the walls, especially if
these are plaster walls. Less than one-eighth of an inch cracks
are considered normal but evaluation by a structural engineer
is commendable for assurance. After filling the cracks in the
ceiling, it can be decorated for an enhanced look. Decorating
the ceiling is an aspect owners don’t pay much heed to while
remodeling the interior of a house. Metal ceilings are longer
lasting and easy-to-maintain than other ceiling types. They are
also variegated in styles and hence more decorative.
Bathroom Remodeling
Depending on the degree of damage, bathroom floors may require
total replacement or filling the irregularities and leveling
the floor. Remodeling it for style would ask for tiling the
walls and floor with choice material like travertine, ceramics,
vinyl tiles, sheet tiles etc. To bring elegance, you can even
carpet it with stain-resistant and moisture-resistant carpets
available today.
Kitchen Remodeling
In most houses, the kitchen is the center of living (eating,
talking on phone, getting together, and so on). Improving the
kitchen can include renovating the cabinets, tiling, and
putting knobs on doors and handles on drawers. Remember to
treat the gouges and holes of the floor first, if needed,
before starting with installing/uninstalling the cabinets or
walls etc. This will save much cleaning and time.
